Late 16th C English Country Woman

The Outfit of an English Country Woman c 1570 is a project I worked on a long time. I started it 2016 and I somehow have the feeling it´s not yet "finished". Several things I want to improve, but after the fotoshooting I can say one thing: it´s amazing to wear! :-)

Some years ago I had the good luck to find a natural-coloured fabric whose warp is made of wool and the weft is made of linen. I thought it perfect to be dyed with plants and bought the whole bolt ;-)
At the beginning of 2016 I dyed the first piece of fabric with madder. I´m still in love with the outcome, and will repeat this dye for an allday dress.

The bodice of the Petticoat that is made of my dyed wool is boned at the front, lined with linen and is to be closed at the sides with laces.

The side lacing easily allows to regulate the size, something I had to try at the end of my pregnancy in November 2016 ;-)

For my projects I preferably try to use fabrics and materials from my stash and I´m happy that it works surprisingly well. Of course I sometimes have to make compromises as with the kirtle. Originally I wanted to make it in blue but I had this lovely green wool in enough length, which I bought some years ago for some Euros per metre. :-)

Lucas de Heere´s farbiger Sketch "London Gentlewomen and a Countrywoman" war hierzu die Inspiration.
The kirtle is open at the front and the bodice is closed with a lace. Lucas de Heere´s colored sketch "London Gentlewomen and a Countrywoman" was the inspiration for that.

The sleeves are pinned onto the kirtle. I plan to stitch eyelets onto sleeves and kirtle to fix them with laces.

The smock is made of white linen, I followed the instructions in "The Tudor Tailor".

For the partlet I needed a piece of black wool. As I do not wear black I had no fabric left but I remembered a skirt of black wool I made some years ago and only wore once.
The partlet is lined with white linen and is pinned to the kirtle with needles.

The coif and forcloth are made of linen and are quite simple with no embroidery but small lace on the edges. One day I would like to make a coif with blackwork embroidery - I´m itching to try ;-)

Jahrhunderts.
Sorry for the overflow of images but I am really happy with this simple but - in my opinion - quite interesting Outfit of a late 16th Century English Country Woman.
PS: Everything in my basket comes from our own cultivation - so it´s practically how our Vegetable Box about 450 years ago would had looked like! :-)

A pair of Utrecht Stays

Unsere 5. Englandreise auf den Spuren von Jane Austen beginnt diesen Freitag und natürlich mache ich mir seit geraumer Zeit Gedanken darüber, was alles mit auf die Reise kommen wird :-) Our 5th trip to England "In the footsteps of Jane Austen" will start on friday and of course I was thinking for some time about what will come along on the trip :-) Im letzten Jahr habe ich für den Flug und die Autofahrten mein 1790er Mieder getragen. ;-) Last year I wore my 1790s stays for the flight and the car rides. It is comfortable and the reed is still intact - but even last year we had to show the security what is under our clothes... Luckily, we are always eeeearly enough at the airport, aren´t we Julchen ! Hobbit Costume

I love my costume for this year´s carnival! I had to sew only two new pieces! :-) I  wore my 1840s Corded Petticoat and 1840s Petticoat , Rokoko skirt , knitted mittens and a Dirndl-Apron which I received as a gift from a work colleague. I shortened the rokoko-skirt a little bit - new made is only the bodice and the cloak.
