Embroidered Empire Evening Dress

*freu*
To make an empire evening dress has long been on my to-sew/wish list and this year I finally have the opportunity to wear such a one at a ball.

Some time before I started with my last dress and my stays, I began with the search for my first ball gown.
After some research on the internet and in my costume books, I decided to go for this evening dress from the "Costume in Detail" by Nancy Bradfield.

In the book the dress is dated to ca 1806-1809, on the website of the Snowshill Wade Costume Collection to ca 1812-1815.
The Original is made of white muslin; the sleeves, the neckline and the hem are embroidered with silk and silver-gilt threads. The hem is also decorated with a golden fringe and gold braids are sewn on sleeves and neckline.

I only found these two photos from the dress on the internet, so I asked at the Snowshill Wade Costume Collection for other/more photos.
I actually got a lot of informative detail images of the closure and the inner life of the dress, as well as images of the embroideries. Thanks again for the kind help! :-)
Unfortunately I have not received the permission to post the photos here - I very much hope to be able to show them here soon.

A second batch silk embroidery thread is already ordered; I´m not sure if I will find material for the golden fringe and the gold braid.
We will see, but before there is much to embroider. :-)

  1. How neat that you have the ability to embroider your own dress and also sew it! I'm sure it will be stunning. It's fabulous that you were able to ask for and receive more information and pictures about the extant dress. I hope you're able to get permission to share, but regardless, it is special that you were able to get the information!

    Best,

A pair of Utrecht Stays

Unsere 5. Englandreise auf den Spuren von Jane Austen beginnt diesen Freitag und natürlich mache ich mir seit geraumer Zeit Gedanken darüber, was alles mit auf die Reise kommen wird :-) Our 5th trip to England "In the footsteps of Jane Austen" will start on friday and of course I was thinking for some time about what will come along on the trip :-) Im letzten Jahr habe ich für den Flug und die Autofahrten mein 1790er Mieder getragen. ;-) Last year I wore my 1790s stays for the flight and the car rides. It is comfortable and the reed is still intact - but even last year we had to show the security what is under our clothes... Luckily, we are always eeeearly enough at the airport, aren´t we Julchen ! Late 16th C English Country Woman

:-) The Outfit of an English Country Woman c 1570 is a project I worked on a long time. I started it 2016 and I somehow have the feeling it´s not yet "finished". Several things I want to improve, but after the fotoshooting I can say one thing: it´s amazing to wear!

I love my costume for this year´s carnival! I had to sew only two new pieces! :-) I  wore my 1840s Corded Petticoat and 1840s Petticoat , Rokoko skirt , knitted mittens and a Dirndl-Apron which I received as a gift from a work colleague. I shortened the rokoko-skirt a little bit - new made is only the bodice and the cloak.
